Decision Sequences
When the call is made is important in fast-moving games
By Craig Bohnert
April 17th, 2009

A critical skill for referees is the ability to reconstruct the "crime scene" mentally and understand how that sequence of events impacts the official's decision-making process. Making the right call often depends on when the call is made.

Here's important analysis from our soccer expert. You'll find this piece informative. Craig is always ready to plead guilty to that charge. But if you're a soccer fan, you're also going to find it exciting and entertaining.

Sometimes Ya Gotta Eat Crow
Unexpected situations will crop up
By Craig Bohnert
October 1st, 2008

No matter how often we read the rulebooks, review Advice to Referees, or discuss plays with mentors and peers, a situation will arise that we haven't covered. How the official deals with it speaks volumes about a referee's style.

This article just proves what we've said all along; namely, Craig Bohnert is the premier soccer writer in the USA. You won't find many officials of his stature willing to "teach the game" by analyzing their own blunders.

Foul v. Misconduct
Knowing the subtle difference is important
By Craig Bohnert
September 19th, 2008

A common misperception among new referees is that they may issue cards for fouls. They can't — but they can give them for misconduct!

Craig Bohnert returns with this, the first of three new soccer pieces.

National Pride — Part II
Top ten reasons why the US doesn't like soccer
By John Neeley
July 31st, 2008

What is the true nature of man?  Are we victims of our environment? Or, are we naturally good or evil?  Is there a God? And if so, does He or She (my wife is checking for spelling errors, so I had to put that pronoun in there) control every aspect of our lives?

Such questions have plagued mankind throughout the ages. Oh, I almost forgot. The most intriguing question of all is: Why do most Americans hate soccer? Many sports enthusiasts have pondered that question and have never found the answer.

I have. It's in the rules, baby.

National Pride — Part I
Together not again
By John Neeley
July 25th, 2008

The "Great Event" is a time in a nation's history that seems to stand still, kind of like a young boy's going out on his first date. Everyone, including lawyers, doctors, teachers, and even criminals, have one sole purpose in life — to watch the event.

Oh, I'm sorry: Did I say lawyers? Yes, we shed the daily trappings of our mundane existence and wait with anticipation for history to be made. A nation tunes in; and for that brief period of time, there will be no liberals who dream of equal rights, no conservatives who live in a world gone by, and no socialists who preach of the promised land.

Political philosophy is dead, and the world is as one.

The game is on.
