So You're a New, High School Soccer Official
What do you do now?
By Don Boss
September 6th, 2010

St. Louis is a hotbed of Soccer. So, what's it like being a new official there? How do you prepare yourself for that first season?

Truthfully, much of what you hear starting out fits officials regardless of the sport they work: Know the game, get into position, handle yourself with dignity. Don's going to talk about two different ones that are also always part of the sermon.

You won't get hurt going over them again.

As usual, you have to click the title.

By Craig Bohnert

The World Cup, like the Olympics, comes every four years. Unlike the Olympics, though, the Cup engages the attention of hundreds of millions of fans. (Remember, fan is derived from fanatic.)

In the US, grown men yawn.

As I pointed out last time, it's in the rules, baby!

Back in March, we published Part II of John's series on soccer. Officiating .com then made the decision to wait until AFTER the World Cup had begun before publishing Part III. But we are re-publishing Part II today so the Top Ten Reasons are all in the same place. Even if you like "football," we think you'll also like John's take on the game.

National Pride — Part II
Top ten reasons why the US doesn't like soccer

What is the true nature of man?  Are we victims of our environment? Or, are we naturally good or evil?  Is there a God? And if so, does He or She (my wife is checking for spelling errors, so I had to put that pronoun in there) control every aspect of our lives?

Such questions have plagued mankind throughout the ages. Oh, I almost forgot. The most intriguing question of all is: Why do most Americans hate soccer? Many sports enthusiasts have pondered that question and have never found the answer.

I have. It's in the rules, baby.

Craig Bohnert is one of the leading soccer minds in the US. In today's article he exults: "Today was one that could be marked as memorable. I actually found myself in agreement with columnist Paul Gardiner!"
