very one of us can recall a scenario when we officiated only part of the play. Why do we hurt ourselves that way? We need to see the whole play before we move our attention elsewhere. Here's an example (now that I have your attention with the title) that should convince you to take a longer (lingering) look.
The play
It's a U-16 boys match between two local soccer rivals. With testosterone levels high and bragging rights on the line, play becomes ragged. The referee has his hands full trying to keep order while still allowing the players to demonstarte some semblance of soccer skill.
The R puts himself in a good position, monitoring a challenge to a midfielder who quickly turns and drives a pass downfield. Following the flight of the ball, the referee suddenly hears a loud "THUMP" — the unmistakable sound of hand into chest. Turning, he sees the offensive player who just passed the ball with fists clenched, squaring off against a defender whose face bears the angelic look of the innocently wronged.
